Newspapers can be a great source of information for research. Their news stories and editorial opinion can give you a fascinating angle on your research topic, whether it's contemporary or historic. And there is more to newspapers than the stories they contain. For example, they can also be a valuable resource for linguistic, business or social trend analysis, or for ascertaining public opinions and finding literary and arts news and reviews.
The library provides a wide range of UK and international newspapers from the 17th century to the present day, mainly in online format, but we do also have some microfilm collections. In addition, we have access to selected television news footage and news reels from the 20th and 21st Centuries. British Newspaper ArchiveMillions of pages of newspapers digitised from the British Library's collections. You can search the archive for free, but you have to pay to read articles (though a million pages have just been made freely available). Please note, this resource isn't available by subscription for academic libraries, but you can access it in many public libraries.

UK Press OnlineArchives of various UK newspapers, including The Daily and Sunday Express and Daily Star. We don't subscribe to this database, but some public libraries provide access, and individual six month or annual subscriptions may be available for a fee.
