Guide to services for NHS staff

Joining the Library

The University has an agreement with the NHS to allow its staff who are employed within the North East and North Cumbria to become members of the Library free of charge.

If you'd like to apply for NHS membership of the University library or renew your existing membership, please complete our online registration form.

When submitting the online form you'll be asked to provide verification of your status as a current NHS employee in the North East or North Cumbria - see the map below for the area covered.  A recent NHS payslip (from the last 3 months) or a current contract will be required as verification. We're unable to accept ID cards as verification because they are undated.

If you are a GP or dentist who works solely with NHS patients, we can accept a letter from your practice as verification. The letter must be on headed notepaper, stating your name, and must confirm that the practice treats NHS patients.

NHS Borrowing membership currently allows you to use the Walton Library which specialises in medical, dental & biomedical resources. Please note that for NHS members, online resources such as electronic journals can only be accessed via our dedicated NHS PCs in the Walton Library - we are unable to offer NHS members off-campus access to these resources due to publishers' licensing restrictions.
