Banner for Step 7 Manage your search results

Every time you get results from a database or a source, you will need to record them and manage them. This process needs to happen before you can de-duplicate your results and then go on to appraise and analyse them. Read the information and watch the video below to see how this process works using EndNote. See the Referencing and Software tools page for other software.
Endnote: for managing your references
  • EndNote is software to help store and organise your research results.  It allows you to add your references, in a wide range of styles, to your Word documents.

  • A downloadable version of Endnote for your own PC or laptop is available from NUIT (Computer Service) on request. It is also available on all University cluster PCs and there is also an online version EndNote Online.

  • EndNote helps you keep track of how many records you get at each stage and you can group them for example by Database.
  • You may have to add grey literature into EndNote manually.
  • Before de-duplicating ensure you have recorded the number of references downloaded from each database.
  • Use the PRISMA flow diagram to record the number of references found before and after deduplication.
  • Keep a record of all search strategies as you go as these are likely to be required for part of your review.
  • To learn how to use Endnote do our self-enrol Teach yourself Endnote course on Canvas.
