Desert Island Discs 2.0 - Karina Forrest

by Amanda Bursk on 2023-09-13T16:29:00+01:00 | 7 Comments

We asked for your must have music (and more) to accompany you to the Library's Desert Island. Karina Forrest (Assistant Librarian, PRL) is now on the island...

1.  Pick 3 or more pieces of music that are special to you:

Stream Metallica - Enter Sandman (dikroN Bootleg) by DIKRON | Listen online for free on SoundCloud

 - Enter Sandman by Metallica They were my first Saturday night headliners at Glastonbury and I will never forget standing in a muddy field with my friends, beyond happy that I was there with them listening to my brothers favourite band (I was v familiar with their music thanks to him)

Groove Is in the Heart - Wikipedia

- Groove is in the Heart by DeeLite  A one hit winder from 1990 and an absolute banger! It was released during the life affirming time I went from School to University and is guaranteed to get me on a dancefloor

Seventeen Going Under - Wikipedia

- Seventeen Going Under by Sam Fender  He's from North Shields (my home town) and has gone from serving beer in the Old Low Lights Tavern to superstardom (and yes, he has served me beer)

2.   What band/singer would you like to perform for you on the island?

Dolly Parton: Queen of Country (2015) - IMDb

Dolly Parton, she is fabulous, talented, can tell a story and is so positive in her outlook she will keep my spirits up

3.   What book would you like to take with you? You will already find the Complete Works of Shakespeare and a copy of the Bible or your choice of sacred text waiting for you on the island

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. It's a huge entertaining read

4.   What podcast and/or radio station would you like access to?

BBC Radio 4 - You're Dead to Me - Downloads

BBC Sounds (is that cheating as it will give me all the BBC stations and podcasts).

If I have to choose one though, I love You're Dead to Me which is a funny look at history from Greg Jenner on BBC Sounds

5.   What TV show and/or film would you like to watch?

Call the Midwife | Facebook

Call the Midwife. 12 series of brilliant, heart wrenching, social, political drama.  Call it a "Sunday night cosy watch" at your peril, it is the most subversive drama on telly.

Season 2 | Young Royals Wiki | Fandom

Special mention must go to Young Royals on Netflix though, it's Swedish and brilliant!

6.   Pick a luxury item for your stay!

Sunblock - I have a skincare obsession and I burn a lot if my epidermis is left unprotected against UV

Great choices Karina, I agree that Dolly Parton is fabulous!! I remember she was much lauded for some good deeds, a quick google reveals several webpages dedicated to documenting the multitude of good deeds she's done.

This was what I was recalling:

The Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library began sending one book per month to each enrolled child in Sevier County from birth until their first year of school. The library was founded in honor of Parton’s father, who was unable to read.

BBC Sounds = Very cunning Karina - there's so many to choose from!

I can't believe I didn't give a special special mention to Doctor Who, so can I add it here please?

Episodes of the new series are all on iPlayer: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006q2x0/episodes/player and I am very excited to see Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor
