Reading Lists

A guide to creating, editing and managing your list

Option 3: Adding items using the Cite it! tool

The Cite it! tool is a browser extension which allows you to add external resources such as Amazon books, webpages, websites, Youtube videos, and other open resources direct from your webpage within your browser. To tool pulls the metadata from that webpage and populates your citation in the reading list system, saving you the time and effort of manually typing all the details.

The Cite it! browser extension is available for Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Adding the browser extension

Your first step will be to add the Cite it! extension to your Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser. You can do this from within your reading list.

  1. In your online reading list, click on the cog icon in the top right corner

  1. Select Cite it!
  2. Click on Browser extension and then follow the instructions based on the browser you are using.
  3. Copy the institution information into the Extension options

Ex Libris have produced a short video which explains how to get this configured correctly.

Use the Cite It! tool

  1. With your reading list open in Canvas, in another browser window navigate to the desired website.
  2. Click on the Cite it! tool on your browser toolbar.
  3. A pop out window appears called Add this to my list.

  2. Remember you may need to edit the metadata and tag the citation for level of importance.

It is likely you are adding books which aren't currently in our stock so this is a way to communicate to our acquisitions team that this item needs to be investigated as an item to add to our collections.
