Reading Lists: a step-by-step guide for Academic Staff

The Reading Lists - Prepare service banner showing an owl.

All reading lists are best accessed via your VLE, usually CanvasAn image showing the Library Reading List link within a Canvas Course menu.

Once logged in, you should see a list of modules on which you are listed as a module owner or instructor.

You and your students can access the Reading List from the Overview page within each module (this is determined by the VLE threshold), or you may decide it is easier to add a Reading Lists link from the main left-hand menu.

However you decide to access your list, creating, editing and managing your list using this service gives your students the opportunity to easily access the Library resources you use to support your module, to filter by tag (essential, recommended or background reading), or perhaps by material type (book, journal article, etc.).

Logging in

To access your reading list you will need to log into your module area within the VLE.

The VLE threshold means that you should see a standard list of links within your module area.

The Reading List link for your module should appear within the Library Information section (which appears as part of the Overview section).

To improve visibility for your students, you may wish to add a link to the Reading List in the main menu on the left-hand side of the page (using 'Add Tool Link').

Click on the Reading List entry and enter your Newcastle University Campus ID and password if prompted.

Accessing your Reading List

If you can't see your Reading List in Blackboard?

If you do not have the Library Information section showing for your module, simply add it by clicking on Overview on the left hand menu.

Then click on "Add Course Module".

To make your Reading List easier to find you may also wish to add it to the left-hand side menu in Blackboard as shown below:

Joint Modules

Due to the nature of how joint modules are managed and displayed within Blackboard, you will need to contact our Web Development Team with details of all the joint modules codes and which reading list you would like displayed. They will do the configuration to ensure the correct list is appearing against each module.

As module leader you may need to add the Library section within the Overview part of your Module.

Within your module, click on Overview on the left hand side.

Then click on "Add Course Module".

If you have contacted the Library Team then they will have configured the systems so that the link within the Library section for "Reading List" will automatically take you through and display the correct list for that joint module.

You will need to do this configuration each year after the data has rolled over on Blackboard.

Adding the Cite it! bookmark

You can use the Cite it! bookmark to add resources to your list. This means when you are on a website like Blackwell's Book Shop or Amazon and you want to add a book which is not on the Library Search (the library catalogue) you can pull the bibliographic details over onto your list without manually adding it all.

In order to install it:

  • Log into Canvas and view your reading list.
  • Make sure the Bookmarks toolbar is showing on your internet browser's page.
  • From the top of the Reading List system, click on the settings icon to reveal a drop down menu. Click on Cite It!

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to drag the Cite it! button into your bookmarks toolbar.
  • Cite It! will now be visible in your browser’s Bookmarks toolbar.
